On 5 December 2015, the inauguration ceremony of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences (HKAS)was held at the Hong Kong Government House. The CPPCC Vice-chairman and China Science and Technology Bureau Director Wan Gang, Chinese Academy of Sciences President Bai Chun-li, Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying and HKAS Founding President Tsui Lap-chee officiated at the ceremony. International renowned scientists from the US, the UK, France, Europe and Taiwan also attended the ceremony.
As the sole founding patron of the HKAS, Dr. Jonathan Choi donated HK$10 million, a matching fund with the government's one to one subsidy scheme to support the ten years development of the Academy. At the invitation of President Tsui Lap-chee, Dr. Choi served as the senior advisor to the President of the Academy.
The HKAS gathered top scientists in Hong Kong including 27 founding academicians, various university presidents, Nobel Laureates Cui Qi and Jean-Marie Lehn. It was a significant boost to Hong Kong's place in the world of science and technology.
